Catch 22...
Women in Catch 22 were portrayed as women depending on only two roles in the war. In the most part, women have been taking the role of sexual companions with the males in the novel. For example, Nately makes it clear that he has more than just a passing interest in his "whore", which naturally evokes in Yossarian a need to possess her as his own. Single women in the novel are portrayed as "whores" and married women are portrayed as the stereotypical 'ball and chain', as can be seen in the following passage: "It was the despair of Lieutenant Scheisskopf's life to be chained to a woman who was incapable of looking beyond her dirty, sexual desires to the titanic struggles for the unattainable in which noble man could become heroically engaged"
